2024 WRDA Fall Kick-Off Dinner
Join us for the Westchester Rockland Dietetic Association's Fall Kickoff dinner on Wednesday, September 25th at Rye Bar and Grill in Rye NY at 6:00pm. In addition to dinner there will be a presentation, "The Gut Microbiome: How the RD can help patients optimize their gut health." by Christine Randazzo Kirschner, MS, RD, CDN
Abstract
The role of microbiota in health and disease has been highlighted by numerous studies and has a profound impact on health. Amongst other functions, the interplay between microbiota, nutrition and host immunity contributes to homeostasis and regulation of immune function.
The bacteria in our gut break down food that the body can’t digest, producing important nutrients, helping to maintain intestinal barrier function, and protecting against harmful germs. However, dysbiosis (an imbalance of microbiota) can lead to dysregulation of bodily functions and diseases including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, inflammatory bowel conditions, etc. While one can’t control all the factors that help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, paying attention to what one eats can help promote the proliferation of beneficial microorganisms.
Learning objectives
Acquire a basic understanding of the microbiome and its growing importance in the treatment and prevention of disease and illness.
Recognize and recommend nutrients and foods that play a role in supporting the microbiome.
Understand the role that prebiotics, probiotics, and fermented foods play in shaping the microbiome.
